Shaping Healthy Choices Program
Developed by UC Davis researchers at the Center for Nutrition in Schools, the Shaping Healthy Choices Program (SHCP) is a school-based intervention designed to improve children's health through a coordinated, community-wide approach. SHCP integrates four key components: classroom nutrition education, family and community partnerships, school food environments (including salad bars featuring regional produce), and school wellness policies.
The program brings learning to life through inquiry-based curriculum, hands-on cooking demonstrations, instructional gardens, and school-wide health fairs. Family newsletters extend healthy habits into the home, while school wellness committees help sustain the program long-term. All SHCP resources, including a best practices guide, classroom curriculum, and family newsletters are free and publicly available on the Center for Nutrition in Schools website.
Featured Tool
The purpose of the Growing Your Market tool is for farmers market managers to identify practices and conditions where more support may be needed to establish and maintain successful food assistance programs (i.e., CalFresh/SNAP, nutrition incentives, etc.) at their market. The tool can be used to support market planning or observe changes over time. The goal is not to receive a “perfect score” but to identify areas of strength and explore additional practices that could help you improve.
