Dr. Rachel Scherr presents at UC Davis Big Ideas Symposium
Dr. Rachel E. Scherr, on behalf of the Department of Nutrition and in collaboration with Professor and Associate Vice Chancellor of Nursing, Dr. Heather M. Young, developed a UC Davis Big Idea that was selected as one of the first-stage finalists of the UC Davis Big Ideas campaign.
Nutrition Welcomes Two New Faculty Members
In September 2016 the UC Davis Nutrition Department welcomes two new faculty members. Dr. Reina Engle-Stone joins the department as a new Assistant Professor of Community and Global Nutrition. Dr. Gerardo Mackenzie joins the department as a new Assistant Professor of Nutrition Science.
Congratulations Class of 2016!
Roughly 80 Nutrition Science majors and over 100 Clinical Nutrition majors graduated from our programs. Also, 37 recent alumni were accepted into Dietetic Internship programs and numerous others are entering graduate programs or will move on to jobs in the areas of industry, research, academics, and public health.

UC Davis Department of Nutrition Partners with Japan’s Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences
The UC Davis Department of Nutrition and UC Davis Extension’s International English and Professional Programs (IEPP) collaborate to bring a group of twenty-two Japanese students and two faculty members from Nagoya University of Arts and Sciences (NUAS) to UC Davis each summer.
Recent Faculty Promotions and New Appointments
In recent months numerous faculty received promotions and a number of new faculty joined the department. Drs. Fawaz Haj and Carolyn Slupsky were both recently promoted to full Professor. Nilesh Gaikwad received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor.
GGNB 2015 Student Symposium
The Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology (GGNB) recently held its annual Student Symposium at the Buehler Alumni Center. The GGNB Student Symposium gives students an opportunity to present their research findings at a professional meeting. Students gave presentations and attended poster sessions where they met with symposium attendees to discuss their research.
UC Davis students compete at the 10th Annual Nutrition College Bowl
UC Davis clinical nutrition majors Nicole Kundel-Greaney, Ashley Labrier, Rachael Parker, and Jaclyn Rangel earned 3rd place in the 10th Annual Nutrition College Bowl competition. The Nutrition College Bowl (NCB) gives nutrition and dietetics students a way to demonstrate their knowledge through competition, while encouraging a spirit of teamwork, enthusiasm for learning, and a sense of community among participants.

The UC Davis Center for Nutrition in Schools was established to support the school community by providing research-based nutrition education programs and resources that improve student health and assist students in achieving their full potential academically, socially, and physically.
Visualizing Science: Incorporating Imaging and Technology in the Classroom
Nutrition 114 (Nutrition and Development) covers fundamental concepts of embryology, developmental biology, and teratology. To help students understand these complex concepts, instructors Drs. Keen and Lanoue incorporated hands-on microscope workshops and collaboration through a Facebook group.

UC Davis students compete at the 9th Annual Nutrition College Bowl
A team of UC Davis nutrition students recently competed in the 9th Annual Nutrition College Bowl competition. After six weeks of training and review of the entire dietetics curriculum, the Aggies earned an impressive 2nd place in this regional competition.

Dr. Liz Applegate, a nationally renowned expert on nutrition and fitness, teaches the popular Nutrition 10 course at UC Davis, which is attended by over 2,000 students each year. Students give rave reviews to Dr. Applegate’s enthusiastic style and her extensive use of innovative classroom technologies such as animation and podcasting.
Nutrition Educators Hope to Cultivate Better Eating Habits in Children
The garden based research program that Dr. Sheri Zidenberg-Cherr planted more than seven years ago has grown. A nutrition specialist in Cooperative Extension at UC Davis, Zidenberg-Cherr has done several studies centering on the use of school gardens in academic instruction to teach nutrition and promote better eating habits.
Clinical Nutrition Students at UC Davis Pursue an Undergraduate Degree Known for its Breadth and Rigor
With assistance from Joan Frank, Dr. Francene Steinberg directs the Didactic Program in Dietetics at UC Davis, which forms the core of the Clinical Nutrition course work. Future dietitians at Davis are taught by the country’s best nutrition scientists. "We place great emphasis on rigorous science courses," Dr. Steinberg says. "It’s a definite benefit of studying here."
Spotlight on Faculty Member Dr. Fawaz Haj
After receiving his doctorate from Oxford, UC Davis Nutrition Department faculty member Dr. Fawaz Haj spent six years as a post doctorial fellow at Harvard. Dr. Haj’s research program seeks to understand the molecular signals responsible for metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
