Program in International and Community Nutrition

Research interests: Community and international nutrition, with an emphasis on maternal and child nutrition. Current topics of investigation include: a) interventions to prevent malnutrition in developing countries (such as the use of lipid-based nutrient supplements), particularly among children under two and pregnant and lactating women; b) iron status of infants and young children; c) cross-cultural comparison of early lactation success and risk factors for breastfeeding difficulties; and d) influence of infant feeding practices on infant intake, growth and fatness, and subsequent risk of child overweight.

Research interests: Nutrition of pregnant and lactating women and of infants and children. Micronutrient deficiencies, including iron, zinc, riboflavin, folate and B12 .

Research interests: Human behavioural ecology.

Research interests: Economic and other determinants of malnutrition in developing countries; food and nutrition strategies of developing countries, including agricultural and livestock policies.

Research interests: Effects of food insecurity and acculturation on the child-parent feeding relationship and preschooler nutrition; design and evaluation of nutrition education programs

Research interests:  Calcium and zinc utilization, especially in relation to different physiological states, such as pregnancy, lactation, aging, or  insufficient or excessive intakes.

Research interests: Biochemistry and physiological function of human milk; effect of maternal factors on breast milk composition; infant nutrition; trace element metabolism; nutrient-nutrient interactions.

Research interests: B Vitamins (folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6); homocysteine; neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's); hepatic tumorigenesis; diabetes; sickle cell disease; assessment of vitamin B12 status, absorption, and turnover.

Research interest: the relation between nutritional status and infectious diseases.

Research interest:  Changes in body composition, body composition methods, effects of dietary interventions on bone metabolism, impact of eating behaviors on bone metabolism.
