UC Davis is one of nine campuses of the statewide system of the University of California. Davis ranks second among the UC campuses in budget, third in enrollment and first in acreage. The campus is located in the Central Valley, about 15 miles west of Sacramento, the state capital. UC Davis is an outstanding research and training institution with 1500 faculty and approximately 24,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students enrolled in three colleges (Letters and Science, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and Engineering) and four professional schools (Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Law, and Management). The modern educational buildings and state-of-the-art research facilities are situated on 5100 acres of beautifully landscaped land at Davis and ten off-campus field stations.

The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, where the PICN is primarily based, enjoys a world-wide reputation for excellence in nutrition, food science and technology, agricultural economics, and agricultural and other related biological sciences. UC Davis has had a long-standing interest in international programs. For example, the graduate group in International Agricultural Development has a Master's degree program in which about 40 students and more than 100 faculty participate. The University has many international research projects; Davis enrolls about 1000 foreign graduate students and attracts 750 visiting faculty from abroad each year.
