(2) Principal Investigator for project entitled "Development of Improved Complementary Feeding Practices and Foods in Pakistan:  A Base Line Survey of Care and Feeding Practices and their Determinants" (2000-2002).  Objectives included:

b) quantification of nutrititional intake using dietary instruments which included FFQ, 24-hour dietary recall, and weighing method,

An observational prospective pilot study will be conducted over 8 weeks each academic quarter for one year in Davis.  The goal of this study will be to use a sun exposure index (personal UVB dosimeter/badge measurements, UVB network information and sun exposure logs), skin pigmentation (reflectometer) and dietary intake to predict vitamin D status as measured by serum 25(OH)D.  We are interested in the association between the level of individual sun exposure, skin color, dietary vitamin D intake and their relationship to vitamin D status in free-living subjects.

Focuses on two early breastfeeding problems: delay onset of lactation and suboptimal infant breastfeeding behavior, and their relation with several perinatal variables.

(2) Breastfeeding and lactational amenorrhea: Study is being carried out in Peru. This is a six-month-follow-up study with first-time mothers to evaluate the relation of several feeding variables and duration of lactational amenorrhea.

Nutrition behavior and disease prevention in the low-income minority population
Current research:

Collaborating with the University of California Cooperative Extension to research behaviors associated with overweight low-income children and adults.  The determinants of overweight were identified in an extensive review completed by UC Berkeley’s Center for Weight and Health.  This project involved researching the literature for behaviors associated with each of the identified determinants.  The results of the literature search provided the backbone for a Healthy Weight Behavior Questionnaire.  This questionnaire will serve as a low-cost, simple evaluation and/or risk assessment tool that can be used to guide low-income populations to make positive diet and lifestyle behavior changes.
