Davis is a university town with a population of about 60,000. The community is closely tied to the University (more than half of its residents either study or work on campus), but the city has developed its own recreational, cultural, and community activities, such as athletics, arts, drama, adult education, and civic organizations. The city boasts 18 large parks with tennis courts, playgrounds, swimming pools, playing fields, and a municipal golf course. Its proximity to the high Sierra, the Pacific coast, Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and the Bay Area metropolitan centers of San Francisco and Oakland, make it an excellent site from which to launch convenient excursions to these and other exciting locations. The town itself has adhered to an intentional slow-growth, environmentally- sensitive development policy to maintain its small town charm and pleasant, community-oriented life-style.
