Zidenberg-Cherr receives 2017 Academic Federation Award for Excellence in Research
Congratulations to Cooperative Extension Specialist Dr. Sheri Zidenberg-Cherr, who has been selected for the 2017 Academic Federation Award for Excellence in Research. This award recognizes Dr. Zidenberg-Cherr’s entire body of work, which has been instrumental in the development of nutrition education curricula, multicomponent interventions, and nutrition education competencies benefiting students, teachers, and school nutrition professionals in the state of California and beyond.
Albert Aguilera receives Chancellor’s Achievement Award for Diversity and Community
Dr. Albert Aguilera was recently selected as a recipient of the Chancellor’s Achievement Award for Diversity and Community for 2016-2017 in the Post-doc category. This award specifically recognizes Dr. Aguilera’s contributions in enhancing inclusiveness and diversity within the campus community.

The executive committee of the American Society for Nutrition’s (ASN) Nutrition Education & Behavior Science Research Interest Section (NE&BS RIS) has selected Dr. Sheri Zidenberg-Cherr to receive the RIS’ first ever Trailblazer Career Award.
Carolyn Slupsky named John E. Kinsella Chair in Food, Nutrition and Health
Dr. Carolyn Slupsky has been named the new John E. Kinsella Chair in Food, Nutrition and Health. The John E. Kinsella Chair in Food, Nutrition and Health was established in 1994, after Dean Kinsella’s passing. The endowment was created using funds provided by General Foods that originally supported the late Professor Kinsella’s research in food science and human nutrition, with specific focus on the interrelationships between food, nutrition, and health. In keeping with Kinsella’s long-standing support and cultivation of junior faculty, the Kinsella Chair recognizes outstanding faculty members during the development stages of their careers.

Lindsay Allen wins Mathile Institute Award for Career Achievement in Evidence Translation
The Micronutrient Forum Mathile Institute Award for Career Achievement in Evidence Translation was awarded to Dr. Lindsay Allen, UC Davis Director of WHNRC (Western Health & Nutrition Research Center) at the Micronutrient Forum global conference in Cancun, Mexico, 24 – 28 October 2016.
Applegate receives 2016 USDA Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award
Dr. Liz Applegate has been awarded the 2016 United States Department of Agriculture Food and Agriculture Sciences Excellence in Teaching Award. The award recognizes university faculty for engaging and preparing students for the future. Nominees are evaluated based on their ability as instructors, educational innovation, service to students, professionalism and scholarship.

Angela Zivkovic selected to be a 2016-2017 Hellman Fellow
Angela Zivkovic has been selected to be a 2016-2017 UC Davis Hellman Fellow. The Hellman Family Foundation contributed funds to establish the UC Davis Hellman Fellows Program to provide support and encouragement for the research of promising Assistant Professors who exhibit potential for great distinction in their research, and who have documented a need for funding.
Carolyn Slupsky selected to serve on NIH scientific review panel
Carolyn Slupsky has been selected to serve as a member of the Clinical and Integrative Diabetes and Obesity Section at the Center for Scientific Review in the National Institutes of Health. Her term begins July 1 and runs through June 30, 2020.
Celebration of 31 years and 60,000+ students educated by Dr. Liz Applegate at her last Nutrition 10 lecture
After 31 years and 60,000+ students, Dr. Liz Applegate taught her last Nutrition 10 Lecture on June 2nd, 2016. Dr. Applegate has been a fixture here at UC Davis teaching the largest undergraduate course (Nutrition 10) and educating more students than any single instructor at UC Davis to date. At the end of her last class she was surprised by a celebration that included presentation of a video with interviews with colleagues and students as well as a visit by Gunrock and the Cal Aggie Marching Band.
Dr. Md Iqbal Hossain awarded the International Healthcare Award
Dr. Md Iqbal Hossain, an alumni of the Graduate Group in Nutritional Biology and the Program in International and Community Nutrition at UC Davis, has been awarded the International Healthcare Award. The award was presented in a recently held International Conference on Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatobiliary Transplant and Nutrition, February 11-14, 2016 in Jaipur, India.
The conference was attended by 1,300 participants and delegates from 100 countries. The award was given to Dr. Hossain considering his excellent clinical service, world class research and teaching activities over 30 years of his medical career dedicated for the improvement of children's health.
Aria Wexler named a 2016 UC President Global Food Initiative (GFI) Fellow
Congratulations go to UC Davis Clinical Nutrition major Aria Wexler, who has been named a 2016 UC President Global Food Initiative (GFI) Fellow. As a GFI Fellow, Wexler will be working with a variety of campus organizations to increase programs on food advocacy and nutrition education for students. She will be focusing most of her efforts on a new program, Fruit and Veggie Up, which is a collaborative program with local markets to recover gleaned produce and distribute to students.

Bo Lönnerdal Named Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition
The American Society for Nutrition has named Dr. Bo Lönnerdal as one of the class of 2015 Fellows To be inducted as a Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition is the highest honor that the Society bestows, recognizing individuals for significant discoveries and distinguished careers in the field of nutrition. Members of the Class of 2015 join 402 ASN Fellows who have been recognized since the program began in 1952.
Robert Hackman Receives honorary Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from Thammasat University
Research Nutritionist Dr. Robert Hackman was awarded an honorary PhD in Medical Sciences by Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand in recognition of his efforts to build collaborative research and scholarly exchanges between UC Davis and Thammasat University.
Dr. Charles Hess named recipient of 2014 UC Davis Medal
Former Nutrition Department Chair, Dr. Charles E. Hess, has been named the recipient of the 2014 UC Davis Medal. Dr. Hess was chair of the nutrition department from 2007 to 2009. The prestigious UC Davis Medal award, presented by UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi, is the premier accolade the campus bestows upon an individual. The awarding of the UC Davis Medal recognizes the very highest levels of distinction, personal achievement and contributions to the ideals of higher education on which UC Davis is founded.

Professor Carl Keen of the Department of Nutrition has been selected to receive the 2014 McCormick Science Institute Research Award in recognition of research contributions that have advanced the understanding of the potential health benefits of culinary herbs and spices.

Kathryn Dewey selected as recipient of the 2014-2015 McCollum International Lectureship in Nutrition Award
In recognition of her dedication and service to the field of International Nutrition Dr. Kathryn Dewey has been selected as the recipient of the 2014-2015 E.V. McCollum International Lectureship in Nutrition Award by the American Society for Nutrition.

Nutritionist Kenneth Brown receives Prince Mahidol Award for zinc deficiency work
UC Davis nutritionist and pediatrician Kenneth Brown is one of five researchers and physicians from around the world recently named to receive the prestigious Prince Mahidol Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the fields of medicine and public health.
